Loved it!! I actually liked the authors other book even more and dished out the money for a hard copy of it. The books are problematic but I also think in some ways they are more realistic to the behavior of men of that time. I feel like modern historical romance heroes and heroines are basically modern characters set in an older setting. All the heroines are feminist spitfires fighting the patriarchy and the men are secretly feminist themselves. I get why that feels safe and attractive to read, but it gets boring for me. My hands clenched uncontrollably I had been prepared for any humiliation but the martyrdom of laughter. I want to read something that really immerses me in a different age with different thinking. I also read This Other Eden recently and was just so fascinated by the hero and how he viewed himself. The writing was also so rich and beautiful. I was blown away.Īnyways, I have been on a vintage romance binge lately because modern books don’t seem to have the same level of epic-ness, depth, and characters who make you come to them and their mindset (instead of characters who seem to fit modern ideals and are more comfortable to read about).
